NLS updates

1. Magazines on Cartridge (MOC)

NLS is interested in feedbacks from institutions from receipt of magazines on cartridges. NLS is trying to gauge the interest from institutions. No one present from the states knew of any inquiries. It was mentioned that institutions were advised to download magazines from BARD for distribution. It was mentioned that one nursing home had purchased cartridges to distribute magazines. Debbi mentioned that at one time we had to tell institutions they were not eligible for BARD and maybe that is why they are not asking for magazines.

2. Talking Book Topic’s (TBT) Order Forms

NLS is trying to gauge the interest of arranging Talking Book Topics by book number. Florida and California have expressed an interest.

It was reported that Virginia and Kentucky having some problems with TBT’s current display. Sharon and Debbi liked ordering by accession number. There were both positive and negative comments on the current display in TBT.

3. National Conference.

Mary Beth reminded everyone that the conference is in 6 weeks. Conference rates on housing ends April 7th and final registration was on April 23rd.

Both Debbi and Craig asked about a confirmation email. NLS did point out that there is a confirmation page of attendees.

WEST

Debbi asked about the formats for the telephone conferences for the NLS advisory groups. NLS responded that it is working on this issue and the NLS hoped to support on-site meeting every two years.

Debbi asked for clarification concerning Dementia as a qualifying condition. Is it a physical or is it under organic brain disorders? Also, who could certify? NLS responded that by itself it is not a qualifying condition of eligibility. But they will revisit the question.

MIDLANDS

        Questions have already been asked.

SOUTH

Craig asked about a list of program costs. This would be needed for legislative oversight boards. NLS is working on this issue.

Virginia asked that BARD browsing be separated in fiction, non-fiction, even Spanish. NLS is working on an open source software package called SOLR. With this product, NLS hopes to offer several new features to help patron browse.

Craig also asked if NLS could notifying libraries when a new magazine title was added to BARD. NLS will consider how best to do so. Op Alerts was one possibility.

Craig asked about locally produced books and magazines on BARD.

NLS replied that in its current pilot of seven libraries working on the uploading to BARD, six have posted works on BARD. NLS hopes to announce the pilot process soon. It plans to invite another seven libraries to work through this process. More will be presented at the national meeting. Mike Martys added details to the pilot. Both cataloging and audiobook uploads needs to be done for each title. Both are submitted separately but the Voyager’s catalog information must be coordinated with the BARD approval process in uploading. Something as simple as a matching book number is critical. The uploading library will also verify all information before the item is loaded into BARD.

NORTH

Adam asked if there was any new information of the use of android devices on BARD. Michael Katzman responded that NLS had just met with Google representatives this morning and they were still in the process of resolving technical issues.
