Libraries for the Blind and Print Disabled

WLBPD@AADL provides materials and support to Youth and Adult book clubs in the following ways:

• Downloads selection(s) onto cartridges for all eligible participants
• If more than one selection is chosen (some book clubs are choosing two selections per meeting), bookshelf instructions are included
• Book club guides are produced in-house (see AADL Book-Club-to-Go info below) for each selection and provided to book club leaders in both Large Print and audio formats
• Books are barcoded and entered into CUL for one book on the cartridge. If there is more than one book on the cartridge, the other titles are added to the patron's Has Had list.
• Book club books are labeled with a “WLBPD Produced” sticker. A note is placed in the patron's record when a book club cartridge is sent.

Ann Arbor District Library's general collection offers a large selection of Book-Club-to-Go kits (125+). Low-vision book clubs are provided the same contents in accessible formats as AADL BCTG kits whenever possible, though not all BCTG titles are currently available through the NLS. Each kit includes:

• 10 copies of the featured book (1 copy in Large Print, if available)
• 1 copy of a movie on DVD, if available
• Summary information and reviews of the title(s)
• An Author biography
• A list of suggested discussion questions and read-alikes
• Tips for book groups on how to select discussion titles
• Book club resources; web sites and print
• An evaluation form for a limited period of time following the launch
• An inventory tag listing all items included in the canvas zippered tote

Low-vision book clubs may request any titles available through the NLS collection and with enough notice, if guides are not already prepared, they will be produced.

The book group meets on the first Monday of the month, excluding holidays. We call members up and patch them into a conference call. The discussion usually lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. Patrons can call the library to join the book group or find out what the next title will be. Audio titles are provided to group members.

Brown Bag Talking Book Discussion meets on the second Wednesday of each month, and lasts 60-90 minutes. People bring their lunches to eat while discussing.

Two talking books are discussed each meeting. Readers can read both, either, or neither of the books. Sighted people reading a print version of the book are also welcome at the discussion.

Every month, the group gets a lists of five possible talking books for discussion. Each person is allowed to vote for two books. The two books with the highest votes are passed out at the following month's meeting, and are discussed at the meeting following. The selection of five books usually includes: one nonfiction book, one historical fiction book, one mystery, and two other books from various categories.

At the meeting, a large print handout is provided that gives the book summaries for today's discussion, next month's books, and the five books to vote on. Braille copies can be provided if a user notifies the library at least one business day in advance.

• Goals: To encourage GLASS readers to read different types of books by various authors and styles of writing. To develop a connection between fellow GLASS readers through reading and book discussions.
  
• GLASS has 5 conference call book clubs (4 female groups and 1 male group). Each book club meets once a month (eg., last Monday, first Wednesday) and meetings last for 60 -90 minutes.
  
• The Clubs are facilitated by volunteer GLASS users.
  
• Each Group has 5-8 members.
  
• ALL books are from NLS collection. Book club members recommend books for the group to read.
  
• GLASS is responsible for downloading the book selections for each member of the books clubs.
  
• The GLASS librarian meets with the group facilitators via conference call once every other month to exchange ideas and make recommendations.
  

Utah State Library for the Blind and Disabled Book Group

• The book group is sponsored by the Library for the Blind and Disabled, but is open to anyone who wants to participate. We currently have participants from Utah, California, and Alaska.
  

• The book group meets for an hour on the afternoon of the 2nd Tuesday in January, March, May, July, September, and November. Participants call a toll-free number and are connected to a conference call. The discussion is led by a librarian from the Library for the Blind and Disabled.
  

• We require that the books discussed be available in DB format and prefer that they also be available in Braille and Large Print if possible. We ask participants to suggest books they would like to discuss, and then the participants select the next book from a list of possible titles. We provide copies of the book for patrons of the Library for the Blind, but not for other participants.
  

• The Book Club meets the second Saturday of the month for 90 minutes. Our reading choices can include fiction, nonfiction or biographies selected by participants at the end of the meeting. The group chooses books for up to five months ahead.
  

• Staff creates cartridges containing all of the upcoming selections and provides instruction on using Bookshelf to navigate among titles. For patrons who ask not to use the bookshelf feature, staff provides individual titles for those patrons.
  

• In our monthly email blast, we include a list of San Francisco Public Library branch book club selections that are available in an accessible format, either NLS recording or downloadable Overdrive audiobook. This is to support our patrons who may want to participate at neighborhood branches near their homes or with club focused on specific interests or needs, such as mystery, world literature or Spanish language.
  

• Our Book Club is currently meeting six times per year (every couple of months). We always have it on a Thursday or Tuesday at 7:00 pm Central time and it lasts one hour via conference call. We have a toll-free phone number so that those of our patrons that want to participate can call in from anywhere in Texas at the time of the book club.

• We send an email blast six weeks before the date of each book club and patrons contact us if they want to RSVP. We send them the book, or they download the title from BARD depending on their preference. One week before the book club, the patrons that RSVPd get a reminder via email or phone (or both if they wish).

• We try to pick varied titles: fiction, non-fiction, adventure, romance, classics, historical fiction, literary fiction, etc. Best sellers are a big one, too. We usually have a list of questions to generate discussion and we always have a lively, chatty crowd with stimulating conversation. Our patrons like it and we do too.
